Abstract
Population growth increases the need for shelter which has an impact on various changes causing the need for space to increase. This need will cause the replacement of forests, gardens or city parks into buildings, housing, highways and others. This study aims to determine changes in the total area of building density in Payakumbuh City from 2001 to 2021. The research method used is the spatial analysis method, namely using NDBI analysis. The results of research using Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021 show an increase in the building density area in 2001 covering 770 Ha, in 2006 covering 1221 Ha, in 2011 covering 1464 Ha, in 2016 covering 2359 Ha, and in 2021 covering an area of 2486 Ha.
